Which charger for a MacBook Air?
The bundled brick is 30W, the MacBook Air accepts more. What a 65W charger actually changes, with the figures.

Apple ships the MacBook Air with a 30W brick. The machine itself accepts more: 60W on the 13-inch models, 70W on the 15-inch. In other words, the charger in the box does not give the laptop everything it could take.
What a more powerful charger changes
On a 13-inch MacBook Air M4, whose battery holds 53.8 Wh:
- with the bundled 30W brick, going from 20 to 80% takes about 80 minutes
- with a 65W charger, it takes 40
Half the time. The gap comes from the power the machine actually accepts, not from any software trick.
Is it bad for the battery?
No. USB-C Power Delivery is a negotiation protocol: the laptop states the voltage and current it accepts, and the charger complies. A 65W charger never forces 65W into a device that only asks for 30.
That is also why one charger suits the phone, the tablet and the laptop with nothing to set.
And for other models
The rule fits in one sentence: if the wattage printed on your original brick is 65W or less, a 65W charger replaces it entirely.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro accepts up to 96W: it charges on 65W, a little more slowly, including while you work. Only the 16-inch models and gaming laptops ask for more.
The compatibility tool works out the exact time for two hundred devices.
